True Panto models are all strictly following the unique design of the ORIGINAL panto shape – created in the UK in the 1920’s. The design is rounded, although not circular. Panto is an absolutely symmetrical design, where the right and the left parts of the lens are mirroring each other, shaped of 6 different radiuses.
Panto model Oxford was the first model to gain tremendous popularity. This was originally a fine nickel metal construction. Very early, the metal frame was equipped with dark brown acetate “Windsor rings”. The identical shape – the same lenses – were produced in acetate material (incorrectly described as “plastic material”). The colors of the acetate was most of the time light brown or dark brown. Due to risk of nickel allergies with the first classics, todays Panto Model Oxford are produced by Stainless Steel – coated in gold or silver finish.
Whilst the true panto should NEVER deviate from the original shape of the lens, the thickness of the acetate material and variations of the outer shape were introduced in the market.
